Bingsu? What is Bingsu?

Bingsu is a traditional dessert in Korea. In the olden days, bingsu is a delicacy available only to the rich and nobles as it was not easy to get shaved ice due to the lack of modern refrigeration equipments. Bingsu is very popular especially during the summer season in Korea. Due to the strong café culture in Korea, many new bingsu flavors will be launched during the hot summer season when Bingsu is especially popular and a very much welcome respite from the summer heat. Bingsu consists of fine flavored shaved iced in flavours such as milk, chocolate or green tea. Ingredients may vary according to the type of bingsu on offer. Popular ingredients and toppings includes ingeolmi, fresh fruits, powder, fruit jams and cereal flakes finished with a topping of ice cream or gelato. Some bingsu will also come with accompanying condensed or fresh milk to be poured over the bingsu according to individual preferences. The finely shaved flavored ice is made possible by using special fine ice shaving machines imported from Korea. The exciting feature about bingsu is that it comes in so many different creative flavors and unique toppings. Some popular bingsu variations includes injeolmi (Korean rice cake) bingsu, patbingsu (Topped with sweetened azuki beans a.k.a pat), strawberry bingsu (Topped with freshly cut strawberry), Chocolate Bingsu (Garnished with chocolate powder, chocolate bits and ice cream), yogurt bingsu (Contains shaved yogurt flavored ice and sometimes also sprinkled with flavored yogurt powder) and cheese bingsu (topped with cheese syrup or even a slice of cheese cake to top it off)
